Asteroid Day

UN-sanctioned annual global awareness campaign

The Asteroid Foundation promotes worldwide understanding about asteroids, their role in the solar system and the risks they pose as well as about the emerging space economy.

Asteroid Day is Asteroid Foundation’s dynamic awareness and educational program to inspire the world about asteroids – how we can use their resources, how asteroids can pave the way for future exploration and finally how we can protect our planet from asteroid impacts.

The UN-sanctioned global awareness campaign is observed annually on 30 June to mark the date of the Siberia Tunguska event, Earth’s largest recorded asteroid impact. Asteroid Day was co-founded by astrophysicist and Queen guitarist Dr Brian May, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, filmmaker Grig Richters, and B612 Foundation President Danica Remy.

Asteroid Foundation runs global Asteroid Day programs, manages local programs such as the Asteroid Day Gala and Technical briefings in Luxembourg.

waveL have been working on Asteroid Day since Markus was appointed Board Chair of the Asteroid Foundation in March, 2020. Through his leadership, the foundation has risen in profile and scope, through securing new funding from the Luxembourg Space Agency, we have shaped the foundation’s strategic vision, expanding its image through public relations and outreach campaigns on a pro bono basis.
