Positioning Europe’s voice for space

Space matters, more than ever. The European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) in Vienna is Europe’s think-tank, ambassador, and voice for space.

ESPI is leveraging an interdisciplinary team of experts and a broad European and international network to provide insights and promote Europe’s interests in space and its position as a global space power. The institute is an internationally recognized forum for the analysis and discussion of Europe’s needs, capabilities, and long-term prospects in space. It facilitates and conducts the research and long-term orientation of space investments and policies, develops proposals and recommendations to decision makers and institutions, advises industries and companies and fosters the international exchange between researchers, experts, diplomates, politicians, industrial heavy weights, and innovative start- and scale-up entrepreneurs.

ESPI engages in high-profile conferences to tackle the burning issues of the sector: the overarching European space ambition and the gaps that Europe has to fill, our sovereign and independent access to space and the role of space for connectivity, climate, mobility, security and defence, the efficient financing of space ventures and the sustainable use of our resources, on Earth and in space. ESPI provides and produces in-depth studies, policy advice, recommendations, scenarios and options, highlighting the role and potential of space technologies and policies in addressing global challenges and propelling Europe as a strong global partner in space.

waveL started to work with ESPI in April 2023, to develop a communications roadmap, a storytelling, messaging, and narrative matrix. On that base, we work with space and technology journalists across Europe, the U.S., Middle East and Asia today, to position and connect ESPI and arrange meetings, conversations and interviews with the press. We help to expand the institute’s footprint and address books, amplify its impact and make it a voice and a go-to authority for journalists and decision-makers in a wide array of topics.

We initiate and conduct dozens of interviews with leading general and specialized media, taking ESPI’s visibility beyond the habitual space community. We establish ESPI’s Director Hermann Ludwig Moeller as an internationally renowned and recommended authority and expert in space. We support ESPI to elaborate on topics that are high on political and industrial agendas, like the launch of Ariane 6 or Europe’s plan to build a sovereign satellite constellation called IRIS2, the importance of dual use in space, the deployment of institutional and commercial, civil and military capabilities, and the eminent catalyst function of space for Europe’s overall geopolitical, economic and societal upscaling.

ESPI’s intelligence, publications and events are an important source and resource for this outreach campaign and storytelling. We supported the launch of the Vienna Space Diplomat initiative, a first-of-its kind engagement platform for the diplomatic community. We developed and transformed the launch of the vision ESPI2040 for the organisation’s 20th anniversary. We provided strategic advice in the development of ESPI’s profile, branding and

visual identity and drew public attention to prestigious ESPI events and publications like the Autumn Conference, public reports and research, policy briefs, insights and the Director’s Perspective on actual developments and issues of the space community, economy and society at large.
